What is the purpose of Silage Mats?
Heavy duty Silage mats are used to cover silage or maize in pits. At 30kg each, they will not blow off or lift in the wind. The weight is evenly spread across, and the rubber mats mould themselves to the shape of the pit, ensuring a tight air seal. It has been proven using silage mats helps slow down the decomposition of silage or maize, and in turn, this helps reduce the volume of effluent. They provide total protection against birds who cannot peck through as there are no holes.
Why shouldn't I use old tyres?
Of course, using old tyres is a cheaper option, but as they are circular, it is impossible to cover every square inch of the cover. This increases the risk of birds pecking through the cover and creates air pockets, increasing the chance of mould and unusable silage. With Silage Mats, the yield of usable silage is massively increased, meaning you need to purchase less should you have not harvested enough or will even be left with a surplus you can sell.

I have always used rubber tyres on my silage pits and saw no reason to switch to using mats. In 2020 I had a problem where air got under my sheet and a large amount of my silage spoiled. In the end I didn’t have enough silage and had to buy in which cost me money. I was advised to use mats instead of tyres but thought this might be “sales pitch”. I bought 12 rubber mats and covered a small 20sqm area of my pit as a test and it was perfect. The mats were easy to handle and resulted in no air pockets or spoil. In 2021 I covered my whole pit in these mats and have seen higher yields since. I would highly recommend you switch from tyres to mats.

Historically I have always had plenty of feed so not been too concerned about getting the maximum yield out of my harvest. In the dry summers of 2020 & 2021 i found myself short of silage so ended up having to buy. It was hard to understand how this had come about. I've always had about 20% go bad and was told that by using mats I could reduce this to virtually zero. I wasn't convinced this would stack up (farming joke!) but to my amazement it did. I spent £1500 on the mats but got most of this back straight away by reducing my waste so much which I subsequently sold some of to a farm local to me. In 2022 he also bought mats. The mats were an investment which paid an instant dividends.

One of the biggest advantages I found with the mats was storage. I have always used tyres collected over the years and when not in use they are a hazard and definitely an eye sore. With the mats i was able to stack them on a pallet which took up a very small area of my yard. Covering the clamp with the mats was easy as the boy just dragged them off the pallet and covered quickly and easily. The handles on the mats are a god send for doing this. Yes they were pricey but I've found them to be worth every penny in increased silage, very little spoil and the labour savings by them being easy to handle.
